Welcome to the home page of Filosofiska Undersökningar

Latest update: December 13, 2002

Information på svenska finns här.

Filosofiska Undersökningar (abbreviated FU, and meaning Philosophical Investigations) is a small firm connected to Göteborg University (GU). FU is managed by Helge Malmgren, philosopher and psychiatrist, who is presently a professor at the Department of Philosophy at GU.

Filosofiska Undersökningar is doing research, education and tutoring in certain areas of philosophy, psychology and psychiatry which are not within the regular program of the university. Concretely, this means lectures, courses and the development of multimedial and other educational stuff in the borderland between the just-mentioned disciplines.

Today's menu:

HyperHermann, a computerised course in the Rorschach technique for psychologists and psychiatrists.

Organisk Psykiatri (Organic Psychiatry) - a Swedish reference work for psychiatrists, neurologists, neuropsychologists and cognitive scientists.

Classification and Diagnosis of Organic Mental Disorders - an English summary of the above work, and three other papers on empirical and philosophical aspects of neuropsychiatry.

Downloadable texts by Helge Malmgren

HyperHermann - an electronic course in the Classical Rorschach

The book by Hermann Rorschach, Psychodiagnostik (Psychodiagnostics) is one of the most influential works in the whole history of psychiatry and clinical psychology.

HyperHermann is a computerised and self-administered course, with the help of which one can learn the basics of the Rorschach technique. It was written by Helge Malmgren in close cooperation with Gösta Fröbärj, one of the Swedish Rorschach pioneers.

To be sure, one does not become an Rorschach expert by taking a self-study course. However, the program conveys the fundamental ideas which underly the test, it teaches you the elements of administration and scoring, and it enables you to understand what the specialists are talking about. It also gives a secure ground for more advanced studies.

HyperHermann takes its departure from the classical European way of doing Rorschach (Ewald Bohm, 1972), but also introduces Exner's "Comprehensive System" and compares Exner's and Bohm's system. Therefore, the program should be useful for the expert who is working in one of these traditions and wants to learn about the other one.

Of course we cannot show here on the Net any HyperHermann screen where the Rorschach plates figures. Instead we have chosen to illustrate the program (Mac version) with a part of its Table of Contents:

The Macintosh version runs on any Mac computer with a colour monitor and 4 Mb of free RAM. HyperHermann 1.2 will only be sold to psychiatrists and psychologists (specialists or under training) and to selected other persons who have a well documented scientific or work-related motive to learn about the Rorschach method.

To order HyperHermann 1.2, go to the download page. You can choose to download the installer, or have it sent to you on disks or CD. For international customers, the price is USD 60 (EU citizens without a VAT registration number: add 25% VAT). This includes s/h, support for six months, and one free update. Payment by credit card is now available.

The latest IBM/PC compatible version (1.4.2) of HyperHermann is tri-lingual, offering Swedish, English and Spanish as options. It runs on Windows 95 and later, including Windows XP. Here you can get an idea of what the Windows interface is like:

HyperHermann 1.4 will only be sold to psychiatrists and psychologists (specialists or under training) and to selected other persons who have a well documented scientific or work-related motive to learn about the Rorschach method.

To order HyperHermann 1.4.2, go to the download page. You can choose to download the installer, or have it sent to you on a CD. For international customers, the price is USD 60 (EU citizens without a VAT registration number: add 25% VAT). This includes s/h, support for six months, and one free update. Payment by credit card is now available. Volume discounts for schools: contact the author!

Note for Windows 1.3 users: HyperHermann 1.4 does not support this operative system, but if there is a demand, a version which does will be developed.

If you have any questions about HyperHermann, please send an e-mail, or send a fax to Helge Malmgren at (+46) 31 773 4945.

Organisk Psykiatri
Teoretiska och kliniska aspekter

The book Organisk Psykiatri (Organic Psychiatry), which was published in Swedish in 1990, is a result of many years of cooperation between a neuropsychiatrist (Göran Lindqvist) and a philosopher who is himself an MD (Helge Malmgren).

Brain injuries and diseases may give rise to mental symptoms because of which is the patient is referred to a psychiatrist for diagnosis and/or treatment. To judge the interplay between organic and psychological factors in these cases, to make a meaningful diagnosis, to prognosticise a probable future course and to choose the best treatment is often a demanding task.

In the book Organisk Psykiatri a theory is presented about the nature of organic mental disturbances. A new diagnostic system is described which is based on this theory and on a wealth of clinical data. The epistemological questions about the interrelations between body and mind are given much attention, as are the semantic problems about the nature of scientific concepts. The book is mainly intended for psychiatrists, neurologists and psychologists but should be useful for anyone who is interested in the workings of the brain and of questions in the philosophy of science.

The journal of the Swedish Medical Association (Läkartidningen) wrote: This book is so original and worth reading that it has its given place in all psychiatric and neurologic education, whether basic or advanced.

The book (which, note, is in Swedish) can be ordered from FU for SEK 300 (plus shipping and, for Swedish customers, tax). Order via e-mail, or by fax to Helge Malmgren at (+46) 31 773 4945

Classification and Diagnosis of Organic Mental Disorders

An English summary of the above work, Organisk Psykiatri (by Göran Lindqvist and Helge Malmgren), forms the first chapter of this 1993 Supplement to Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. We also report an empirical trial of our diagnostic system in a series of patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The last two chapters are, respectively, a semantic analysis of the concepts used in DSM-III and a philosophical essay on concept formation in psychiatry.

The booklet can be ordered (price: SEK 60 plus shipping and, for Swedish customers, tax) by e-mail, or by fax to Helge Malmgren at: (+46) 31 773 4945.
